Agile Leadership Podcast #2
Welcome to Agile CxO.org and our Agile Leadership Podcast. Today’s guest is Kirsten Bosch, application development division administrator for the Chief Information Officer from the great State of Iowa.
“There’s a lot of arguments you can make for using Agile methodology. We talk a lot about focusing on value to the business, focusing on the transparency, which is something we talk a lot about in government specifically. We talk about delivering software frequently with higher quality. These are really important topics when we talk about Agile.
“One really important thing for me when talking to my leadership, as well as to business leadership, is this: It’s important that we are providing opportunities for our technicians and our IT folks. I really subscribe to the concept of servant leadership, which means, “I’m here to serve others and to help them fulfill their potential to be successful, whether it’s the folks who are reporting to me, the IT people, or the business partners.” So, having an environment where agility and continuous improvement are part of the culture, not only provides existing employees with new opportunities to fulfill their potential and try new things, but it also helps us attract outside talent.
“The Des Moines, Iowa market is a very competitive developer market. So now that we are using cutting edge technologies and methodologies, combined with civil aspects and public service (because I’m seeing a lot of people care about that), developers are now considering us a viable career path. I think for IT leaders, it’s important to learn about your own staff, not just how to satisfy the business customers, because if your staff is happy, and you’re creating opportunities for them, then the business value will come.”
